The threat of Asbestos is still alive and well according to a study by the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA) which shows Australians are still unaware of the dangers of living with Asbestos. Asbestos may be present in many homes built or renovated before 1990 as Asbestos was still used in cement sheeting, roof tiles, insulation and other building materials.

Homes in Cootamundra may contain dangerous loose-fill Asbestos but no-one is currently certain of its presence.
The NSW government has been running a voluntary purchase and demolition program. The program provides free testing for people in Cootamundra living in homes built before 1980.
“To our knowledge no houses in our region have been affected,” said Gundagai Council (Cootamundra Office)’s Chris Imrie. That said, Mr Imrie estimated that over 30 houses have registered for testing but it is yet to be carried out.
